Strikethrough'07 Take Two

I know that this post isn't full of yay and fanfic rec goodness, but I am seriously distressed with the direction that LJ is going in. I'm sure everyone in fandom has heard about Strikethrough'07 that happened in May, but I am worried about their even more heavy-handed behavior with suspensions and account deletions. [livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121 and [livejournal.com profile] elaboration have both been suspended on the 2nd and not allowed to post anymore to LJ because of "supposed" chan fanart they've done for [livejournal.com profile] pornish_pixies depicting "minors" in sexual situations. This persecution coupled with LJ's plans to add a Report Abuse button means that anyone can and will be suspended based on LJ's whims.

So this freaks me the hell out. I run a bunch of doujinshi communities and I don't want them to be suspended and me kicked off of LJ/prosecuted, because LJ decides that certain doujinshi are obscene. I feel obligated to put up disclaimers in my comms, because I don't want anyone's account to be suspended. So how the hell will I word this? I don't know. I have to think about it. I'm going to spam the dj comms that I'm changing things around so that everyone has to agree that they're eighteen or older or leave and that the characters in the doujinshi are at least eighteen even in flashbacks. Stupid LJ. God this sucks. And this doesn't even cover the fact that just reading about all this will most likely mean I'm going to have to leave LJ soon.

I'm stalking a bunch of the info journals about this, [livejournal.com profile] innocence_jihad, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_flies, and the Greatest journal following this, fandomtossed.

Flocking the communities to members and adding min security code so people automatically post friendslocked may assist significantly in the problem as much as it irritates me.

However, LiveJournal will automatically change the security of the entry to Members-only. To set the minimum security level for your community, log in as the maintainer and access the Admin Console and execute:

set for communityname newpost_minsecurity level

Note- I think adult communities are fine and have their place, and those I think /should/ be flocked because that is a specific aim, but it's somewhat problematic if every post has to be flocked or general gen things have to be flocked as well.

[identity profile] shinra-lackey.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I'm on the fence about what should and should not have to be flocked in communities. I mean, just because something could have a sexual nature it doesn't mean that it's obscene or shouldn't be discussed. However, I don't want children to wander onto those posts either.

So I don't want to lock all posts on any of the dj comms, because I think that gen/teen posts should still be accessible to everyone. But I still don't know LJ's policy on reporting abuse and if posting under f-lock will curtail a decision to suspend a journal/comm. All it would take is for a troll to join a comm and then they could go ahead and report member only posts, or a dissatisfied member could decide to get back at a comm and report away.

So thank you for the info on how to set posts to f-lock automatically. I didn't know how to do that, but I guess I'm saying that I don't plan to change the posting guidelines now, because I don't think that locking everything will help more than the current policy of f-locking adult posts. I'm most likely going to just change the membership policies to make the comms moderated membership, so that I can approve new members and try to stop trolls and people who aren't 18+ from joining. That way non-18+ people can still watch the community and comment on open posts.

Argh. I just hate the fact that a pastime that doesn't hurt anyone has to be monitored and controlled like this. Stupid LJ.

I agree. =/

*hugs* I'm sorry! D: That really really sucks. (I've had my fair share of being outraged at LJ.)

I'd completely understand if you want to make the Hikagu no Go doujin community 18+ only. I'm 17, so I wouldn't be able to access it, but it'll make me feel a lot better knowing that I'll have a chance to catch up on posts later (instead of waking up one morning to realize LJ had deleted a bunch of doujinshi/scan communities).

Ah, [livejournal.com profile] svz_insanity, don't worry. I'm not going to lock down [livejournal.com profile] hikago_djs. See, I want fans regardless of age to be able to share doujinshi, especially since most of what we post is gen or teen. I guess it's just kind of sucky that I have to change the way we operate because of LJ's change in policy.

Also.

Ljarchive, can be used for communities I believe - so I think it may be a good idea to go and back up your computers - even if it's something that just sits on your computer it's something that can be recovered later on if you want it - not done from scratch all over again.

Gives details for using lj archive.

Also as always feel free to ignore anything I say - I don't know if I'd lock down the community if I was in the position... Just giving you the information I have. =/

Thanks for the info! I've already downloaded LJArchive and backed up my personal journal. I'll get to backing up the communities too, since you let me know that they can backup communities too. I'll try to see if I can make alternate comms with GJ in the future too, in case we decide to do a mass exodus.

[identity profile] tininess.livejournal.com 2007-08-05 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
since [livejournal.com profile] qem_chibati already beat me to it: I have backed up my journal and my newly christened (WHY?~) icon comm. :( [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_daily has already made that adults only move, as you know.
Have you archived the comms already? I really hate saying this, but LJ is turning into a sad tragedy. So, for now, I advise backing up the entries.

btw, What's your GJ account?

[identity profile] shinra-lackey.livejournal.com 2007-08-06 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm working on backing up the comms as we speak on LJArchive, and in the next week or so, I'm going to look into making back up journals in GJ. I'm not sure how well I'll keep them backed up or if it's even possible to do a massive transfer with comms, but we'll see.

My GJ journal name is the same: shinra_lackey, but there's nothing in there yet. Do you have one too?
