Hikaru no Go by Hotta Yumi and Obata Takeshi is a Japanese manga about a young boy, Shindou Hikaru, who finds an old goban (Japanese go board) that houses the spirit of Fujiwara no Sai, a go master from the Heian period. Sai has been haunting this go board for a thousand years in order to play go even after his death to get closer to the Hand of God. The shounen-ai subtext kicks in when Hikaru agrees to let Sai play go through him. Since Hikaru has never played go, he first stumbles into a go salon and challenges Touya Akira, son of Touya Meijin, the best go player at the time. Suffice it to say that Sai thrashes unsuspecting Touya, and so begins Shindou and Touya's rivalry (read mutual infatuation).
The manga for Hikaru no Go can be found on IRC right now as VIZ plans to release it in January. The anime can downloaded through bittorent at Animetorrents.com.
Ghost and its sequel That Which Watches Form the Shadows by Michelle Thatcher (AU, gen)
Jigo by Dracostella (future-fic, gen)
Just Breathe by Ju (humor, gen with shounen-ai innuendo)
Someday Comes Some Day by Konpeitou (gen)
Seance de Go by
aishuu (gen)
His Name, Evanescence, and Secrets by K.Huntsman (shounen-ai)
Ghost and its sequel That Which Watches Form the Shadows by Michelle Thatcher (AU, gen). A self professed fixer story where Touya tries to understand Hikaru's go and the player within him.
"You said you were losing. How can you lose against
yourself?"
"I lose against myself all the time."
"Then you win just as often."
"Oh, no. I lose every day. I've never won yet."
Jigo by Dracostella (future-fic, gen) The day Akira became a 9-dan, his father died of a heart attack. Alone, Akira finds himself in a strange new match with Hikaru. (Completed) A very well written series that helps to define the relationship/rivalry of Touya and Shindou.
Just Breathe by Ju (humor, gen with shounen-ai innuendo) Umm, humor means funny stuff, so go read it?
Something was wrong with this picture.
Hikaru couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was; he was sitting in the playing room before the matches were scheduled to start, as always. Every once in awhile, another pro would wander in and greet his or her friends, as always. Everyone steered respectfully clear of Touya when he approached his designated place, and Touya himself looked somewhat discomfited by the attention he was receiving; but then the God-like treatment was something Hikaru saw practically everyday, and was as normal an event to him as breathing, so that wasn’t it either.
There was something wrong with this picture, but only as the bell rang to indicate for players to nigiri did the realisation finally hit Hikaru like a sack of potatoes to the head.
Touya was wearing jeans.
Blue jeans.
Tight blue jeans.
Someday Comes Some Day by Konpeitou (gen) Touya asks Hikaru when someday will be. A conversation piece.

aishuu (gen) Like with all of my fandoms, there is always a few authors that I just fangirl over. In Hikaru no Go, Aishuu is my queen. She writes with such knowledge of the characters that you really think it's them speaking at times. So read Seance de Go and all her other works.
His Name, Evanescence, and Secrets by K.Huntsman (Akira/Hikaru, shounen ai, post-series) Look, my first actual shounen ai rec for the series, aren't you proud? Told form Akira's POV, the series chronicles how the two first got together.
Question: I know that no one probably reads my journal, but if you do, do you know why most Hikaru no Go authors have Akira as the cook in their fics? Is it part of cannon or just something cute to counterpoint everyone's impression that Hikaru can't cook? Why can't Hikaru?

Date: 2004-01-10 08:25 pm (UTC)From what I've seen of the anime (haven't read the manga, sorry), I haven't seen either of them cook. We see more of Hikaru's home life, and he seems to spend most of his time in his room playing with Sai. He hardly seems to talk to his mother, and I'm not sure if he even has a father.
But he seems to like ramen. If Akira makes good ramen, then he'd be well on his way to making Hikaru very, very happy. :-)
Ooo, sparkly replies...
